Install AtlasOS on Windows 11

This guide follows my video, Windows 11 Too Slow? Install Atlas OS & Remove Bloatware Fast! | Step by step installation guide. It covers the preparation needed before applying AtlasOS, the official playbook workflow, and the checks to complete after the system restarts.

Important Before You Begin

AtlasOS changes Windows configuration, services, privacy settings, and installed components. It is intended for users who understand the trade-offs of a reduced Windows installation.

  • Back up personal files to another drive or cloud storage.
  • Create a Windows recovery drive or keep official Windows installation media available.
  • Record your Windows activation and application license information.
  • Disconnect external drives that should not be modified during setup.
  • Use this guide on a test or secondary installation first if the computer is used for work.
  • Read the current AtlasOS documentation because requirements can change between releases.

Requirements

  • A supported 64-bit Windows 11 installation.
  • Administrator access.
  • Stable internet access.
  • At least one restart available during the process.
  • A working keyboard, mouse, network connection, and display after setup.

1. Start with Windows 11

Install or update Windows 11 normally first. Finish the initial setup, connect to the internet, and allow Windows Update to complete its pending updates.

Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Restart until Windows reports that the system is up to date, then create your backup and recovery media before making system changes.

2. Prepare the System

Before running the AtlasOS workflow:

  1. Save your work and close all applications.
  2. Temporarily uninstall software that should not be retained on the optimized installation.
  3. Make sure you can sign in to an administrator account.
  4. Download files only from the official AtlasOS website or repository.
  5. Keep the recovery media connected or nearby, but do not run unknown scripts from third-party mirrors.

3. Download the Official AtlasOS Files

Open the official resources:

Follow the current installation instructions there. AtlasOS uses a playbook-based workflow, so the exact application name and steps may change between releases.

4. Apply the AtlasOS Playbook

The normal workflow is:

  1. Open the official AtlasOS setup or playbook application as administrator.
  2. Review the detected Windows version and the list of planned changes.
  3. Read the privacy, service, security, and feature changes before accepting them.
  4. Select the recommended AtlasOS playbook for your Windows version.
  5. Start the apply process and do not shut down the computer while it is running.
  6. Restart Windows when the tool requests it.

Do not force-close the playbook application or interrupt a restart. The tool may need time to apply policies, remove selected components, and configure services.

5. Complete the First Login

After Windows restarts:

  • Sign in and wait for the desktop to finish loading.
  • Confirm that the display resolution, network, audio, and input devices work.
  • Open Settings > Windows Update and review the update behavior.
  • Reinstall only the applications and drivers you actually need.
  • Check Windows Security and understand which protections remain enabled.

6. Test Your Workloads

Test the tasks you use most often before relying on the system:

  • Games and launchers
  • GPU drivers and control panels
  • Bluetooth and controllers
  • Printers and external devices
  • Browsers, development tools, and virtualization
  • Sleep, shutdown, restart, and multiple-display support

If a required feature is missing, consult the AtlasOS documentation before manually re-enabling services or applying random registry tweaks.

Troubleshooting

Windows does not boot correctly

Use Windows recovery media or the recovery environment created before the installation. Restore the backup or reinstall the official Windows image if necessary.

A device or application stops working

Check the official AtlasOS documentation and the device vendor’s driver page. Avoid downloading replacement DLLs or scripts from untrusted websites.

Windows Update or security features behave differently

That can be an intended consequence of the selected playbook. Review the current AtlasOS documentation and enable only the services required for your use case.

You want to return to standard Windows

Use the recovery image or Windows installation media prepared before applying AtlasOS. A clean reinstall is often the most predictable way to return to an unmodified Windows environment.
